More Obvious Play Buttons

I think it might help new visitors if we make it easier to get right into the action here on panelchutney. Right now, those of us who used paneljam know how the site works, but it might seem a little overwhelming to new players. Maybe a big obvious play button on the homepage that drops users into a random SFW strip in progress, might be helpful? Maybe it would also help if we had a "Find another random strip" button on the actual page under the "draw next panel button"? Like how paneljam used to. This way they aren't being given 200+ strips to look through. (I also suggested this because I just barely found out you can click the dice for a random strip. :V)

`Skullheart` Very much agreed, a lot of the aspects of the site are a bit buried and need to be easier to find for attracting new users. The thing is, those of us who are used to it won't have a problem but it can easily bounce new users off who want to quickly get into it but don't know how. Also, I don't think the dice buttons even do a random strip, for me they just take me to the galleries of Completed and Underway games in chronological order! A random strip button would be pretty good.

`Peyo` Also no insult to your work intended by pointing this out, the site's great (Honestly the features you have added are above and beyond any other site by a long shot. The animation aspect is incredible and the inclusion of moderation tools is amazing!) but it could definitely use a lot of quality of life improvements to make it more fun to get into if you want to grow the membership easily.

I'm all for making it easier people to get into things but there is a few things to consider/solve first: - new users start as limited users and can only make new strips (for safety reasons) - in general it seems people are afraid to add panels to existing strips (that was also a problem in PJ it seemed to me that people got intimidated by good art and was afraid to add stuff) πŸ€”

I'm not sure what could be wrong with random strips the random number is generated on server side so it's really strange if it works differently for people πŸ€” (one bug I'm aware of is that it sometimes tries to take you to a secret strip - but i digress) not sure about what to do with the button though.. maybe we could redesign the top menu.. ? πŸ€”

`Peyo` Oh really? So it IS supposed to be random? When I click either of the dice buttons for completed or underway I just get them in chronological order. Let me test it to make sure, so I'm not having a silly moment, but I have actually used the dice underway button to take me to the oldest strips repeatedly. Let me test that out.

`Peyo` I just tried it and both repeatedly take me to the galleries of Completed and Underway strips in chronological order. That's interesting, I always assumed it was something you wanted to add and didn't put in yet.

ok I just rechecked the function because I thought I was going crazy: we are definetly using the php rand function for this .. can you give an example list of strip ID's you get with random? πŸ€” (e.g. I did a quick test with the underway dice and got: 1911,266,1515,1185,1900,1858,1938,1815,1861)

Well okay let me see how to do this. The only oddity I would think of is I'm on Kubuntu Linux and use Brave browser. Let me check and I'll post the IDs

Okay for Completed it is: 1920 1988 1711 1295 1868 299 452 It's exactly the same as the ordering of completed strips on the site's front page.

For underway it's.. 1996 1941 1993 1975 1999 1847 But it's actually an exact match for what strips most recently received a new panel and it's the same every time I refresh, and always has been. For me, Underway is just a list of what strips have gotten a new panel in order from most recently to oldest.

i'm not sure how linux does this (it's like an anomaly) πŸ€” ok just one more test (bear with me) what you get if you just press the link here: [https://pchutney.com/random_comp](https://pchutney.com/random_comp) (if you get 1920 things are strange) [https://pchutney.com/random_panel](https://pchutney.com/random_panel) (if you get 1996 things are double strange)

`Peyo` Okay now those are randomizing! I did each one a few times and got different strips each time.

thats good news πŸ‘ now.. does this work the same way when you click on the dice? or you just shown the page you normally do when you click on underway or complete? πŸ€” (so far my theory is that you cannot click properly on the dice in brave for some reason or another - and if so I guess the top menu will definetly need a rethinking πŸ€” )

`Peyo` Inexplicably, now it's working! I tried both and it's showing a random result. So... It works! I don't know if you changed something or if there's some peculiarity in Brave/Linux but it seems to be absolutely fine now and delivering random results.

If it makes you feel better `Peyo` I think it's always been random for me, so I didn't know it wasn't working for some other users.

Great points. I forgot the limited thing. Silly me. Thank you for the hard work and considering the suggestion!

it's a good idea to make it simpler I'm just not sure how maybe we could just add a giant 'new strip' button into the limited user message .. or make the button in the header highlighted or animated for new usersπŸ€”
